I Don't Remember You- National Alzheimer's Awareness Month

November is National Alzheimer's Awareness Month

This is something we were recently informed of, and for Alzheimer's Awareness, we would like to feature our song, "I Don't Remember You".

This is a song that was written by a good friend, Jim Taubken, who worked with Alzheimer patients for many years. The words just came to him one night and he got up and just started writing, and when he was finished writing, the lyrics are what we have now. Just by reading the lyrics, so many people were touched and tears came. He then reached out to us and asked about putting music to the words. Within a day, Matthew had the music that fit so nicely with the words.

Alzheimer's hits close to home for me (Sarah). My grandparents had this disease and it hurts so many loved ones that are around them. It started off small, like my grandmother not remembering where she put her checkbook (in the same place she always kept it), but it seemed like it rapidly decreased her memory to not remembering who my grandfather was, but thinking he was her uncle who had passed away many years ago. I remember one time, when I was 16 years old, I went over to their home to give them their medication and they couldn't remember who I was. My grandmother said "You look familiar, now who are you again?" It broke my heart, I tried my hardest not to cry, but as soon as I left, I broke and cried to my parents. It was hard on me, I can't imagine how much harder it was on my dad and my aunts and uncle.

This song captures exactly the way things happen, remembering things, people, or events from the past like "I Love Lucy" and Frank Sinatra, or John F. Kennedy, but not remembering the person you raised or who has been there beside you most of your life, "I know your eyes, they look like mine...but I don't remember you" This line in the song, I think, hits home for so many who are working through the struggles of parents or loved ones with Alzheimer's. The first time this song was played for my dad, there was not a dry eye in the room.

Our hope and prayer with this song is to raise awareness for Alzheimer's and to let others know that there are so many who understand what you are going through.

Amazing Weekend

Just had to post that this weekend was AMAZING!

Friday night, July 26th, we played in our hometown of Grove City, Ohio at Plum Run Winery. The turn out was phenomenal! We felt so over whelmed by all the support from our family and friends, and from all who were there that we don't personally know but came out for a good time. We couldn't have asked for a better night. It really was a GREAT time! Thank you ALL for making this night so special for us!

Also what was exciting for us, we had a story in our home paper about us playing- so totally unexpected!!

Saturday, July 27th, Started out wonderful as well, had our first interview as a duo with the Grove City Record who will be releasing a story of us this week (So excited). Later in the afternoon we had a great time playing in Grandview, Ohio for the Lazy Daze of Summer Festival with Kennedy Blake.

Being back home and seeing family and friends, even for a short period of time, means so much to us. Thank you all for your love and continued support, it really means a lot.

Black Baccara Home Concert

As a surprise to our families, since they are in Ohio and we are in Nashville, we decided to put on a first ever Black Baccara Home Concert where they can watch from the comfort of their homes. 

This was a spur of the moment decision that seemed to go over really well. They really enjoyed it and it was a special gift that we could give to them, just to say thank you for all of their love and support.

New Song Available

We are excited to announce that we have released our new song "I Want You"

"I Want You" is an Americana/Folk style song, similar to The Civil Wars' "I've Got This Friend". It's an upbeat song about wanting to share the special moments with the person you love (even when you don't like them)

Our Name Black Baccara

In the first post to our Facebook Page, we stated we would explain the name of Black Baccara and how it came about, sometime in the future. Well, more and more are asking where the name came from, so here it is.

What is a Black Baccara?

Black Baccara is a deep red rose with a velvety look to it and depending on the light, they can almost look black.

I (Sarah) love flowers, roses being one of my favorites, and the Black Baccara has special meaning to me in a few ways, from our wedding to the remembrance of my grandmother.

The first time I heard of a Black Baccara was when I was picking out flowers to be added to my bouquet for our October wedding. The florist showed me the rose and I loved it and they complemented the Mango Calla lilies and traditional red roses very well. Also as part of our wedding ceremony, after lighting the unity candle, Matthew and I would give Black Baccara roses to the mothers, he giving one to my mom and I giving one to his mom. Very special moments.

My grandmother, Rosalie Paige, was a beautiful gospel singer, traveling around to different churches and gospel sings, and even had the honor of singing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN from the invitation of her friend Dottie Snow. When I was 5 years old, my grandmother had my brother and I, and my cousins, to begin singing with her in church and at malls around Christmas time. She called us the Mustard Seeds (This could be a story for another time). Anyway, my grandmother has always been an inspiration, getting me started singing and so I always wanted to honor her name when coming up with a name for a band or group. This is why I felt Black Baccara would fit, since it's a rose and my grandmother's name was Rosalie. It just felt right.

How we came to the name was when Matthew and I were just coming back from a meeting. I told him I was recently thinking if I ever came up with a business name maybe I would call it Black Baccara. Then he looked at me and something just clicked and he said, "or a band name." I loved it! We had been trying to think of a name to call ourselves, but with everything we tried nothing had been just right, but Black Baccara, it just clicked!

So that is how we came up with the name Black Baccara, I hope you love it as much as we do!

About "By The Ocean"

By The Ocean is the first song that we wrote together again after taking a 4 year hiatus from music. Matthew picked up his guitar and just started playing the tune and words quickly came to my mind while I was in another room. I then went to the bedroom and after about 15 minutes I had almost all the words written down to By the Ocean. I was very excited and called Matthew into the room to take a look at what I had written, he helped me change some things around to make it fit and he added the last verse and there it was, the ocean song- what we started calling it. 

The music Matthew was playing sounded like a nice beachy tune and one of my most favorite places came to my mind, The Outer Banks, NC where I have visited MANY times for vacations, and in recent years Matthew joined (and loves it as much as I do). By the Ocean is basically the everyday experiences we have while in the Outer Banks. Waking up early, going to the beach every morning, just relaxing and spending time together, and most evenings watching the sun set over the Pamlico Sound. It's a place where the entire family goes to visit (cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws, close friends) and if one year someone is not able to go, you do wish that they were there with you to experience the tranquility and beauty that it holds year after year, and the togetherness of loved ones. 

By The Ocean, to me, is the feelings I get when I am in one of my favorite places in the world with the people that I love.
